And More...

Years in the making for you today…

In 1878, a priest named Father Mahoney, trekked 80 Kilometers from Tauranga to Rotorua to bathe in a hand-dug, fern and manuka-fringed thermal pool where Polynesian Spa is now located.

Bathing regularly in the waters over several months, Father Mahoneys’ arthritis was greatly alleviated, initiating an international reputation for the therapeutic properties of the hot mineral spring water.

Operated by the Government, the Pavilion Bath House opened as the first building on the current site of Polynesian Spa. The thermal springs around the Government Gardens where Polynesian Spa is sited, were the reason for the town of Rotorua being planned, by way of the Thermal Springs Districts Act 1881.
